9 Common Myths About Reiki – Debunked
Let’s clear up some of the biggest misconceptions about Reiki:
"Reiki is a religion"
Nope — Reiki has no dogma, no belief systems to adopt, and no rituals to follow — it’s a healing practice that works with universal life force energy. You don’t have to subscribe to any spiritual path to benefit from Reiki. It simply supports your natural ability to heal, wherever you are on your journey.
"You have to believe in Reiki for it to work"
Reiki isn’t powered by belief — it’s received by the body, not the mind. Even if you’re skeptical, the calming effects of Reiki can still help you relax, reset, and restore. It's not about "believing" — it's about being open to the experience.
"Practitioners give you their energy"
False! Reiki practitioners aren’t giving away their personal energy. They’re simply channeling universal life force energy — it’s not about power or control. It’s about presence, intention, and flow. Think of it like a garden hose: the water flows through, not from the hose.
"Reiki cures illnesses"
Reiki is not a cure for medical conditions and should never replace conventional treatment. However, it can complement medical care by reducing stress, easing side effects, improving emotional resilience, and supporting the body’s natural healing processes.
"It’s only for physical issues"
Reiki goes beyond the body. It helps with emotional and energetic healing too — anxiety, grief, emotional overwhelm, trauma, or feeling disconnected. It creates a gentle space for your whole self to unwind.
"It’s just like massage"
Not quite. Although my style of Reiki incorporates gentle hand positions along the main chakras and secondary chakras (check back for a post with more info about the chakras - where they are and how they work) - Reiki works with the body's energy, not muscles.
"Distance Reiki doesn’t work"
Energy isn’t bound by space or time. Just like you can feel connected to someone across the globe, energy can reach you wherever you are. Many people feel deep peace, warmth, or emotional release in distance sessions — all from the comfort of their own home.
"All Reiki sessions are the same"
Just like no two therapists or yoga teachers are the same, Reiki practitioners each have a unique style, energy, and training. Some work intuitively, others follow a strict structure. Some incorporate sound, crystals, or guided imagery. It’s okay to try a few until you find the right fit.
"Reiki is witchcraft or the dark arts"
Reiki isn’t black magic, sorcery, or the occult. It’s not about manipulating energy for power. It’s a gentle, heart-centered practice rooted in compassion and balance. Reiki supports love, healing, and personal growth - not malicious intent, control, or fear.
